Why Do We Need Arch Support?

A very real and valid question, especially in these tough economic times when every shilling matters. If Trucare is recommending that you need an arch support insole, is it truly necessary? Today, let’s break it down and give you an ironclad argument for why arch support is important, not just for your feet, but for your overall health.
What Is the Purpose of the Arches in the Foot?
The human foot has three arches:
Medial longitudinal arch
Lateral longitudinal arch
Transverse arch

These arches are formed by the tarsal and metatarsal bones, supported by ligaments and tendons. They act like springs, helping the foot bear weight, absorb shock, and stay flexible for walking, running, and daily movement. Without healthy arches, the foot loses its natural “shock absorbers.”
What Happens with Fallen Arches (Flat Feet)?
When the arches collapse, the condition is called pes planus, or flat feet. In this case, the inside of the foot often touches the ground and the ankles tilt inward.
Flat feet are not life-threatening, but they can lead to:
Foot and ankle pain
Shin splints after long walks or runs
Joint strain, because the foot is forced to compensate

Flat feet anatomy
Over time, untreated flat feet can cause more serious problems, including:
Gait (walking) disorders
Knee, hip, and lower back pain
Chronic musculoskeletal issues

Why Early Detection Is So Important
Flat feet are easier to manage — and sometimes even correct — when discovered early.
In children: By age 3, a visible arch should start to form. If a child shows signs of flat feet or deformities, it’s best to get a professional evaluation. At Trucare, we often recommend the Supramalleolar Orthosis (SMO) device. This custom-made brace supports the foot and ankle, helping children with flexible flat feet develop a more natural gait and strong motor skills.

In adults and older children: Once the foot bones have matured, custom orthotics like insoles for flat feet are the best solution. While they won’t “grow” an arch, they provide crucial support, reduce discomfort, and prevent long-term complications.
